‘سخنان لِموئیل شاه، وحی‌ای که مادرش به او تعلیم داد: «چه گویم ای پسرم،

۲چه گویم ای پسر رحِمِ من، چه گویم ای پسر نذرهای من؟

۳نیروی خویش را صرف زنان مکن، و نه قوّت خویش را صرف آنان که شاهان را به نابودی می‌کشند.

۴ «ای لِموئیل، شاهان را نمی‌شاید، شاهان را نمی‌شاید که شراب نوشند، و نه حاکمان را که مشتاق مُسکِرات باشند.

۵مبادا بنوشند و قوانین را از یاد ببرند، و حق را از مظلومان سلب کنند.

۶ مُسکِرات را به آنان ده که هلاک می‌شوند، و شراب را به تلخکامان؛

۷تا بنوشند و فقر خویش فراموش کنند و تیره‌روزی خویش دیگر به یاد نیاورند.

۸ «دهان خود را برای بی‌زبانان بگشا، به‌خاطر دادرسی همۀ بیچارگان.

۹دهان بگشا و عادلانه داوری کن؛ فقیران و نیازمندان را دادرسی نما.»

حکمت: همسری شایسته

۱۰ کیست که همسری شایسته تواند یافت؟ ارج او از یاقوت بس فزونتر است.

۱۱ دل شوهرش بر وی اعتماد دارد و از هیچ سودی کم نخواهد داشت.

۱۲در همۀ روزهای زندگی خویش به شوهرش نیکی خواهد کرد، نه بدی.

۱۳پشم و کتان را می‌جوید و با دستان خویش به رغبت کار می‌کند.

۱۴همچون کشتیهای بازرگانان است که خوراک خویش از دوردستها می‌آورد.

۱۵آنگاه که هنوز شب است، برمی‌خیزد؛ طعام برای اهل خانۀ خود فراهم می‌کند و کنیزان خویش را نصیبها می‌دهد.

۱۶مزرعه‌ای در نظر می‌گیرد و آن را می‌خرد؛ از دسترنج خویش تاکستانی غرس می‌کند.

۱۷با عزم راسخ به کار مشغول می‌گردد و نیروی بازوان خویش را به کار می‌گیرد.

۱۸منفعت تجارت خود را می‌بیند، و چراغش در شب خاموش نمی‌گردد.

۱۹ دستان خویش به دوک دراز می‌کند و انگشتانش چرخ را می‌گیرد.

۲۰فقیران را با روی گشاده می‌پذیرد و دستانش را به روی نیازمندان می‌گشاید.

۲۱چون برف ببارد، دغدغۀ اهل خانۀ خویش ندارد، چه همۀ اهل خانۀ او جامۀ گرم به تن دارند.

۲۲ برای بستر خود ملحفه می‌دوزد؛ کتان لطیف و ارغوان می‌پوشد.

۲۳شوهرش را در دروازه‌های شهر می‌شناسند، و با مشایخ ولایت می‌نشیند.

۲۴ جامه‌های کتانْ دوخته، می‌فروشد، برای بازرگانان شالها تهیه می‌کند.

۲۵قوّت و عزّت، جامۀ اوست؛ و بر روزهای آینده لبخند می‌زند.

۲۶دهان خود را حکیمانه می‌گشاید، و تعلیم محبت‌آمیز بر زبان اوست.

۲۷بر امور اهل خانۀ خویش نظارت می‌کند، و نان بیکارگی نمی‌خورد.

۲۸فرزندانش برخاسته، او را مبارک می‌خوانند؛ شوهرش نیز او را می‌ستاید:

۲۹«زنان بسیار کارهای شایسته کرده‌اند، اما تو بر آنها همه پیشی گرفته‌ای.»

۳۰جذابیت فریبنده است و زیبایی زودگذر؛ اما زنی را که از خداوند می‌ترسد، باید ستود.

۳۱او را از ثمرۀ دستانش بدهید، باشد که کَرده‌هایش وی را در دروازه‌های شهر بستایند.’
